Morphological Study of Coronary Arteries in Human Cadavers

Introduction: The heart supplies oxygenated blood to the body by a pair of coronary arteries which arise from the ascending aorta. The Coronary arteries show a wide range of variations, which have a great clinical importance during various diagnostic procedures like percutaneous coronary interventions, coronary artery surgeries or prosthetic valve replacements. The present study is carried out to observe the origin, number & location of coronary ostia, branching pattern and variations if any.
Materials & Methods: The study was carried out on 50 human hearts collected from the embalmed cadavers of the department of Anatomy of our institution.
Observations: In present study, 90% specimens showed single ostium in anterior aortic sinus, and 10% showed two or more. In 84% specimens right coronary ostia are in sinus region and left coronary ostia in sinus region in 76% specimens. Left coronary artery showed Bifurcation in 58%, trifurcation in 32% & tetrafurcation in 10% specimens. SA Nodal artery originated from right coronary artery in 72% specimens while from circumflex branch of left coronary artery in 28% specimens. The AV nodal artery originated from right coronary artery in 80% specimens and left coronary artery in 20% specimens.
Conclusions: Coronary artery disease is one of the major causes of death nowadays. Congenital, inflammatory, metabolic and degenerative diseases also may affect the coronary circulations. So the knowledge of coronary arteries is essential for the various diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in the management of coronary artery diseases. Thus in the interest of this subject, this study is pursued.
